Roll Artisan Bakery and Coffee

We were approached by Roll a couple of years ago in order to develop the brand from scratch. Their vision of providing high quality, artisan pastries for the hospitality sector and out of their storefront as well as their passion for Fairtrade, craft coffee resinated with us from the off. We were excited!

Get in Touch

The Brief

Roll had years of experience as bakers but wanted a fresh brand to start out on their artisan adventure. The brief was simple; a brand that demonstrates that Roll is a master craft baker whilst ensuring it remains warm, welcoming and not intimidating to customers who just want a plain coffee and croissant. They also wanted to focus heavily on the coffee, which they’d be sourcing themselves from Fairtrade farmers across the World.

Colour Scheme

The colour scheme for this brand would be key. Natural colours that give off both warmth and sophistication, two traits that often collide with each other.

Furthermore I wanted to use a colour scheme where there was multiple different colour combinations in order to style their coffee packaging for different types of coffee.

An off-black and an off-white are always useful, whilst a dark green is the most natural colour whilst still maintaining warmth. Dogwood and Russet were then chosen to compliment the green, whilst giving enough contrast to suit accessibility standards.

Typography

In order to keep costs lower, Roll opted not to go for a fully bespoke font, so instead I sourced licensed fonts to suit.

Firstly, their heading text. We went for the chunky Arista Alternate 2.0. to represent the soft and chunky pastries and large sourdough loaves that make Roll who they are. The font gives the brand a very bold and recognisable typeface, that was then utilised for their text logo.

This theme was continued for Roll’s main typography, Bubblebody. This complimented Arista Alternate well, whilst offering a very accessible and easy-to-read font for slightly larger bodies of text.

The Final Product

Roll loved and signed off the brand with no modifications. Their branded line of coffee and merchandise has already proved to be a big success, whilst their delicious (believe me, they are!) lines of artisan pastries continue to roll out to increasing numbers of cafes and restaurants in the area, as well as out of their branded shopfront in West Lancashire.

Testimonial

“Working with Nathan on our brand was a delight. He truly bought into our passion and was almost as excited as us to get our dream business off the ground! We had a vague idea of what we wanted and gave a very brief description but could not have imagined the final, finished product. Very impressed and would recommend to anybody looking to get their brand off the ground!

We’re looking forward to booking in for our website to be developed by Nathan in a few months,”
